LIMINALITY – The Space In Between
We’re told how we should be. That we have to be one thing or the other. That we live in a black & white world. To fit in an existing box. But, Is fitting in and staying in one place forever a way to have proper success? There’s a place and time for everyone. A time to mutate and move. And a place to stay wherever we find comfort.
Victor Turner defines Liminality: “neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremony…as chaos is the source of order, liminality represents the unlimited possibilities from which social structure emerges. While in the liminal state, human beings are stripped of anything that might differentiate them from their fellow human beings…they are most aware of themselves” If we don’t find our place, we create it.
Liminality is a midpoint between a starting point and an ending point so once we find a place -the one we created- we can start seeing beauty around us. And, here’s where we appear! By using balloons [being us] passing through/on top of shapes [being the world]… A balloon trying to fit in the space given. And that moment is captured. Showing that the moment in between brings beauty.
